In Pjotr Sapegin’s Madama Butterfly
animation, a love story comes to life. A woman meets a sailor and falls in love
with him. They sleep together, which was a little weird and graphic compared to
the normal Claymation videos I am used to (aka Rudolf the red nose reindeer)
and shortly after the sailor leaves. She later finds out she is pregnant and is
overjoyed to tell the sailor upon his return. However, when the sailor does
return he comes in a car filled with his assumed wife and children. They take
the women’s child along with them and the women is left heartbroken (who wouldn’t
be). At the end, she takes her own life
and is blown away with the breeze. In the afterlife, she is at peace with her
life.
My first
thought after watching this opera was how impressed I was with the intense emotion
of passion and depression they could portray in a stop-motion animation.
Secondly, I think the music was really well done, especially in the scene where
the women gives birth to her daughter. Also, I found some of the metaphors
extremely interesting. A butterfly follows the women throughout the film. After
analyzing the opera, I think it is a representation of her happiness. When the
sailor leaves, so does the butterfly and it finally returns in the women’s
afterlife. The metaphor helped me understand that in the end, the women is
content once again with her life.
All in all,
I enjoyed this opera. I thought the story line, which was extremely well done
in animation, was realistic and can resonate with a lot of viewers.
