Choose your favorite three performance artists and study how they are related. What do they have in common?
My favorite three performance artists are The Guerrilla Girls, Banksy and Ana Mendieta. The Guerrilla Girls started in 1985 to fight for the underrepresentation of women artists. They used unorthodox tactics to force progress within the realm of feminism, all while wearing guerrilla masks and I love it. They made feminism seem like a glamorous club you want to be a part of. Banksy is another one of my favorite performance artists. He combines political activism, dark humor and graffiti to create works of art. He displays his art on publicly visible surfaces such as walls and self-built physical prop pieces. He does not sell any of his art or photographs. My final favorite performance artist is Ana Mendieta. Ana was a performance artist, sculptor, painter and video artist during the feminist movement. My favorite pieces by her were her Silueta Series, where she created female silhouettes in nature with all natural materials. All these performance artists are related because they use art to speak their opinions on the world surrounding us. Whether its the Guerrilla Girls and Ana Mendieta speaking out about women in the art world or Banksy on political and social issues in England, they use art and their wide audience to send an important message that change needs to occur.
Is technology an essential part of their work?
Technology is essential to the distribution of their artwork and the message attached to it. Without photography or video taping, Banksy's temporary work would go undocumented and therefore unnoticed. The Guerrilla Girls need to get crowds to join their protests in order to make a difference. Without technology, the word would never get around that this feminist group were at different parts of the world and needed your support. Without technology, the word of Ana Mendieta's powerful artwork and mysterious death would have never been recorded and distributed. Without technology, the protests that occurred following Ana Mendieta's trial would have never been organized and successfully orchestrated.
What is to be done in the area of Performance Art?
The next generation of artists and free thinkers need to take on performance art. When researching performance artists they are all artists that are previous generations. I think performance art is an important presentation tool that can catalyze change in society and I think it will be interesting to see my generation speak up about different issues facing us through art.
